Not Everyone Is Ready to Give Up the Tub

Some People Still Want to Bathe. The Step-In Conversion Makes That Safe.

A tub-to-shower conversion is the right answer for many seniors. But not everyone is ready to give up the tub entirely. For someone who has bathed in a tub their whole life, losing that option matters. The problem is not the tub itself. The problem is the 14- to 18-inch wall they have to step over to get into it.

A step-in tub conversion solves exactly that problem. A section of the tub’s front wall is professionally cut and finished, lowering the entry height significantly. A custom-fitted, watertight acrylic insert is sealed over the opening. The result is a tub that is now safely accessible with a low step-in entry, without touching the plumbing, the floor, or the surrounding walls.

The work is completed in one day. There is no demolition, no new plumbing, and no waiting for materials to be ordered and shipped. Paul arrives, the conversion is done, and the bathroom is back in service the same afternoon.

How It Works

The Step-In Conversion Process

The entire conversion uses your existing tub. No new fixtures. No plumbing work. No structural changes to the bathroom.

1

Assessment

Paul looks at the tub, confirms the model and material are suitable for the conversion, and determines the correct placement and size of the opening. Most standard tubs qualify. He tells you upfront if yours does not.

2

The Cut

A clean section of the tub’s front wall is removed, lowering the entry height. The cut is made precisely to the specified dimensions. The edges are smoothed and finished so there are no sharp surfaces or rough spots at the entry point.

3

The Insert

A custom-fitted acrylic insert is sealed over the opening using a watertight, professional-grade seal. The insert fits precisely to the cut dimensions and creates a finished, factory-look entry. It keeps water in the tub during a shower while allowing the low step-in entry for bathing.

4

Done

Paul walks you through the finished conversion, confirms the seal is watertight, and demonstrates proper use. The bathroom is ready to use the same day. Warranty documentation is provided before he leaves the job.

Helping You Choose

Step-In Conversion or Full Tub-to-Shower: Which Is Right?

Step-In Conversion Is the Right Choice When:

The person still wants the option to take a bath and is not ready to give that up entirely.

Budget is a priority and a lower-cost solution that directly addresses the safety problem is preferred.

Minimal disruption is important. One day, no demolition, bathroom back in service the same afternoon.

The tub is otherwise in good condition and does not need to be replaced.

Tub-to-Shower Conversion Is the Right Choice When:

Bathing in a tub is no longer practical or desired, and a dedicated walk-in shower is the preferred solution.

A built-in shower seat is needed for seated bathing, rather than using a portable bench inside a tub.

The tub is old, damaged, or stained and needs to be replaced regardless of the accessibility concern.

Maximum long-term accessibility with a permanent, purpose-built shower system is the goal.

Not sure which is the right fit? Paul will tell you honestly at the estimate visit. He is not going to sell you a larger job than what solves the problem.

Worth Considering

Pair the Conversion with Grab Bars for Full Coverage

A step-in conversion solves the entry problem. Grab bars solve the stability problem inside the tub and at the point of exit. Both are often needed in the same bathroom.

Paul can assess and install both at the same visit. The step-in insert goes in, grab bars are anchored into the studs beside and above the tub, and the bathroom is fully addressed in one appointment. Ask about combining services when you call.

Common Questions

Step-In Tub Conversion FAQ

What exactly is a step-in tub conversion?

A step-in tub conversion involves professionally cutting a section out of the front wall of an existing bathtub and sealing a custom-fitted acrylic insert over the opening. The result is a significantly lower entry height that allows safe access without stepping over the full tub wall. The tub itself remains in place and can still be used for bathing.

Will the tub still hold water for a bath after the conversion?

Yes. The acrylic insert is sealed watertight over the opening. When the tub is filled for a bath, the insert holds the water in. There is a small inner lip at the base of the insert that retains water during bathing. The tub functions normally for both bathing and showering after the conversion.

Is a step-in conversion or a tub-to-shower conversion better for my situation?

It depends on two things: whether the person still wants to bathe in a tub, and the overall condition of the existing tub. If bathing is still important and the tub is in good shape, the step-in conversion is the right tool. If bathing in a tub is no longer practical or desired, or if a built-in shower seat is needed, a full tub-to-shower conversion is the better long-term solution. Paul discusses both options at the estimate visit and recommends the one that actually fits the situation.

Does the conversion work with any bathtub?

Most standard alcove bathtubs qualify for the conversion. Cast iron, fiberglass, and acrylic tubs are all candidates. Paul inspects the tub at the estimate visit and confirms whether it is a suitable candidate before any work is scheduled. If the tub is not a good fit, he tells you clearly and explains the alternatives.

What warranty comes with a step-in tub conversion?

Labor carries a one-year warranty. The insert system carries a manufacturer warranty that is provided in writing at job completion. Paul goes over warranty terms before the job begins so there are no questions about coverage after the fact.
