Why This Matters

A Grab Bar Installed Wrong Is Worse Than No Grab Bar at All

When a senior reaches for a grab bar during a fall and the bar pulls out of the wall, the result is worse than if the bar had not been there. The person falls anyway, and now they have a false sense of security to overcome the next time they enter the bathroom.

This happens when grab bars are installed into tile only, into drywall anchors, or with suction cups. None of those methods hold body weight under a dynamic load. The only installation that holds is one where the bar is anchored through the wall into the structural studs behind it.

Paul Knox is a credentialed Residential Grab Bar Specialist. He knows where bars need to go, how to find the studs behind tile and drywall, how to mount the hardware so it does not move, and how to locate bars for the specific height and mobility needs of the person using the bathroom. That is the difference between a bar that looks like it is installed and a bar that will actually catch someone.

Where We Install

Grab Bar Placement Locations

Placement is not guesswork. Paul assesses the bathroom and the person’s specific mobility needs before a single hole is drilled. Every bar goes where it will actually be used.

🚿

Tub & Shower Entry

The entry point is where most falls happen. A vertical or angled bar at the shower or tub opening gives the person something solid to grip while stepping in and out. Positioned for the specific height and reach of the user.

🛋

Shower Back Wall

A horizontal bar on the back wall of the shower supports the person while standing and bathing. Properly placed at a height that allows a firm grip without reaching or bending. Critical for those who shower seated and need to shift position.

Toilet Area

Standing up from a toilet is one of the hardest movements for seniors with reduced leg strength or hip issues. A bar mounted on the adjacent wall at the correct height makes the transition from seated to standing safe and controlled.

🏠

Full-Room Assessment

Some bathrooms need bars in multiple locations. Paul walks the full room and identifies every point where support is needed, not just the obvious one. A single visit can address the entire bathroom if that is what the situation calls for.

Important

The Hardware Store Grab Bar Is Not a Safety Device

Suction cup grab bars and grab bars mounted only into tile or drywall anchors are not rated to catch a falling adult. They are designed for light assistance, not fall prevention.

When a person grabs one of these under the sudden load of a fall, it releases. The resulting fall is often worse than it would have been without the bar, because the person was relying on support that failed.

The Right Way to Install a Grab Bar

Into the Studs. Every Time.

A properly installed grab bar goes through the tile or surround panel, through the drywall behind it, and into the wood or metal stud. The fasteners engage solid structural framing. The bar does not flex, rotate, or pull when loaded.

Finding studs behind an existing tile wall requires the right tools and experience. Getting it wrong means either hitting empty wall cavity or cracking tile. Paul has done this work for years and knows how to find solid backing without damaging the surrounding tile.

ADA-compliant bars installed into studs are rated to support 250 pounds of static load and significant dynamic force. That is the standard NextStep Bath Solutions works to on every installation.

One Grab Bar Is a Real Appointment

Most of the larger bath remodeling companies in Columbus will not schedule a grab bar only call. There is no margin in it for their business model. They are set up for full conversions and multi-day remodels.

NextStep Bath Solutions takes grab bar calls. One bar by the toilet. Two bars in the shower. A full-room assessment for a senior who just came home from a hospital stay. These are exactly the jobs this business exists to do.

Call (614) 365-1522 or use the contact form to schedule. Paul will give you a price over the phone for straightforward single-bar jobs. If an in-home visit is needed to assess the wall and placement correctly, that visit is free.

Common Questions

Grab Bar Installation FAQ

Do you install just one grab bar, or is there a minimum number required?

There is no minimum. One bar by the toilet is a real appointment. Two bars in the shower is a real appointment. Paul will come out, assess the wall, locate the studs, and install exactly what is needed. The job does not need to be larger than what the situation calls for.

Where should grab bars be placed in a bathroom?

The standard locations are: at the shower or tub entry, on the back wall of the shower for support while standing or seated, and adjacent to the toilet for sit-to-stand support. Height and angle are adjusted based on the height and mobility of the person using the bathroom. Paul does a full assessment before any bars are placed so the installation matches the actual user.

What is the difference between a suction cup grab bar and a permanent installation?

A suction cup grab bar is not rated to catch a falling adult. It is designed for light balance assistance only. A permanently installed ADA-compliant grab bar is anchored into the wall studs with fasteners that engage solid structural framing. It is rated to 250 pounds of static load. The two products are not comparable for fall prevention purposes.

Will installing grab bars damage my tile?

Installing grab bars requires drilling through tile, which is a permanent modification. Paul uses the correct drill bits for ceramic and porcelain tile to minimize cracking and controls the process carefully. He discusses the drilling locations and what to expect before any work begins so there are no surprises. The mounting plate of the bar covers the entry holes cleanly when the installation is complete.

How long does grab bar installation take?

A single grab bar installation typically takes one to two hours. A full bathroom with bars at the shower entry, shower wall, and toilet area can be completed in a single visit. Paul works cleanly and leaves the bathroom ready to use when the job is done.
