The Problem with a Standard Tub

A 14-Inch Tub Wall Is Not a Safe Entry Point for a Senior Adult

The standard bathtub requires a person to lift one leg over a 14- to 18-inch wall, balance on one foot on a wet surface, and lower themselves without anything solid to hold. For a younger adult in good health, that is manageable. For a senior with reduced strength, limited flexibility, or any balance issue, it is a fall waiting to happen.

A tub-to-shower conversion removes that problem entirely. A low-entry shower base eliminates the step-over hazard. A built-in seat means the person can bathe seated without a portable chair tipping on them. Properly anchored grab bars provide real support, not the false security of a suction cup. A handheld showerhead puts control in the user’s hand whether they are standing or seated.

This is not a luxury upgrade. It is a safety correction. NextStep Bath Solutions does this work specifically for seniors and mobility-limited adults in Columbus and Central Ohio. This is what Paul Knox has built his business around.

What’s Included

How NextStep Builds a Tub-to-Shower Conversion

Every conversion uses the same solid approach: a permanent base, three-piece wall system, and the safety components that actually protect the person using the shower every day.

Shower Base

Low-Entry Solid Base

A solid, pre-formed shower base replaces the old tub pan. The entry threshold is low, eliminating the high step-over that causes falls. The base surface is textured for slip resistance. It is set level and drains properly from day one.

Wall System

Three-Piece Wall Surround

Three-piece wall panels cover the alcove from base to ceiling. The system is watertight, durable, and easy to clean. No grout lines to mold or scrub. The surround is fitted to the specific dimensions of the existing bathroom opening, not forced to fit.

Safety Feature

Built-In Shower Seat

A seat built into the wall system is stable, positioned correctly, and rated to hold body weight. It cannot tip. It does not need to be set up before each use. It is part of the shower, not an afterthought placed on the floor.

Safety Feature

Stud-Anchored Grab Bars

Grab bars are anchored into the wall studs, not just the surround panels. A grab bar that pulls out of the wall when someone grabs it in a fall is worse than no bar at all. Paul places bars where they are actually needed: at entry, at the shower wall, and at the seat.

Fixture

Handheld Showerhead

A handheld showerhead on an adjustable slide bar puts the controls where the person using the shower needs them, whether standing or seated. It also simplifies rinsing without having to move around the shower under a fixed head.

Enclosure

Door or Curtain Option

The conversion can be finished with a shower curtain or a door, based on the homeowner’s preference and the bathroom layout. Paul discusses both options at the estimate visit so the choice is made with full information before work begins.

What the Process Looks Like

1

Free In-Home Estimate

Paul comes to the home. He looks at the bathroom, takes measurements, discusses the homeowner’s specific needs, and walks through all options. He answers questions on the spot. The estimate is provided in writing. There is no pressure to sign that day.

2

Materials Selected and Scheduled

Once the homeowner approves the proposal, materials are ordered to the specifications of the job. An installation date is confirmed. Paul’s uniformed crew is scheduled. Everything needed for the job is on hand before installation day begins.

3

Installation: One to Two Days

Paul’s crew arrives in uniform. The old tub is removed. The base is set, the wall system goes up, grab bars are anchored into studs, and the showerhead and enclosure are installed. Paul is on site one to two times each day to verify the work meets standard. The bathroom is protected throughout and left clean when the crew is done.

4

Walkthrough and Warranty

When the job is complete, Paul walks the homeowner through the finished shower. He demonstrates the grab bars, the seat, the showerhead, and the enclosure. Labor carries a one-year warranty. Product warranties vary by manufacturer and are provided in writing at job completion.

A Note on Scope

This Is a Wet Area Conversion, Not a Full Bathroom Remodel

NextStep Bath Solutions does not gut bathrooms or replace vanities, flooring, and fixtures throughout the room. The work is focused on the wet area: the tub comes out, the shower goes in. That keeps the scope clear, the timeline short, and the cost appropriate for what is actually being solved.

For most seniors looking to make the bathroom safer, a full remodel is not what they need. They need the tub gone and a functional, safe shower in its place. That is exactly what this service delivers.

If additional work is needed in the bathroom, Paul will tell you at the estimate visit. He will not start a job he cannot finish correctly.

Common Questions

Tub-to-Shower Conversion FAQ

How long does a tub-to-shower conversion take from start to finish?

Installation takes one to two days in most cases. The old tub is removed on day one and the new shower system is installed and finished. The timeline depends on the condition of the existing space and the scope of work confirmed at the estimate visit. Paul does not rush a job to fit a schedule.

Does the conversion require tearing up the bathroom floor or walls?

The work is contained to the wet area. The existing tub is removed and the alcove is prepared for the new base and wall system. The bathroom floor outside the shower area and the rest of the room are not touched. This is a wet area conversion, not a full bathroom remodel.

Are the grab bars strong enough to actually support body weight?

Yes, because they are anchored into the wall studs behind the surround panels, not just into the panels themselves. ADA-compliant grab bars installed into studs are rated to support the full weight of an adult. A grab bar that is only fastened to tile or a liner panel is not reliable and is not how NextStep installs them.

What warranty comes with the installation?

Labor carries a one-year warranty. The products installed, including the base, wall system, and fixtures, carry manufacturer warranties that vary by product. Paul provides warranty documentation in writing at job completion so the homeowner knows exactly what is covered and for how long.

Can I use the bathroom while the installation is happening?

During the installation days the shower is out of service. If there is only one bathroom in the home, Paul discusses the timeline and scheduling at the estimate visit so the homeowner can plan accordingly. The goal is always to get the job done correctly and return the bathroom to use as quickly as possible.
